1. Avoid Renting a Car That Is Too Large
While a large, wide station wagon or a massive SUV sounds comfortable for highway cruising, it can prove highly impractical in daily Spanish life. Spain is famous for its charming, yet incredibly narrow streets. This is especially true when visiting historic village centers inland or when parking in public underground garages in cities like Torrevieja, Alicante, or Cartagena. These garages were often built decades ago and feature tight corners and narrow parking bays. With a compact or mid-sized car, you will maneuver through them much more smoothly, avoiding unnecessary stress and parking scrapes.

2. Choose High Ground Clearance ("High on its Legs")
This is perhaps the most valuable local tip we can share. In Spain – and particularly in the residential areas around Orihuela Costa and the golf courses of Villamartín – you will frequently encounter badenes (speed bumps). These bumps are often much higher and steeper than those in Northern Europe. Additionally, some access roads to the most beautiful, secluded beaches or nature reserves are unpaved.

A car with low ground clearance easily risks scraping its underside when crossing a speed bump or navigating a pothole. Therefore, choose a model with slightly elevated ground clearance. This not only drives more comfortably and offers a better view of the road, but it also protects the bottom of your rental vehicle.
